Lately, I am in my feelings about the ways of the world. With our President running the country into the ground, the future seems bleak. Despite, the name which we will not speak, there is an uptick in activism and people fighting for human rights. This is the only good thing to come from this presidency. All the negative goings-on also make me wonder what I can do when there isn’t a rally, march or gathering.
How effective is digital activism? Is it really activism? Does social media help solve social issues? There is a line to draw between activism and slacktivism.
Everyone with access to the internet knows that it is user-friendly, moves news fast, and it’s fun to use. If tools are used accurately any message can be shared and made available to everyone.
The tools, according to Reset: Digital For Good, Digital and Online Activism that are available are blogs, micro-blogging, social networks, online petitions, mobile phones, and proxy servers. With each of these tools, you can take your activism to another level.
Some people argue that social media activism might spread the word, but it doesn’t facilitate actual change. This seems accurate, but even using a hashtag shows people where you place your support. Posts and hashtags, make it difficult to determine the difference your ideas are making. Online petitions are more effective. Either way, sharing your ideas builds opinions and drives the message further.
What this all boils down to is, if you want to spread the word or a belief through online activism, do it. Stay your path and be consistent. Besides posting on social media, start an online petition or an email writing campaign. Use your phone to text or call contacts from a volunteer phone bank.
You can do more than share posts. Use the digital platform as an effective way to build your activist resume. In the current political climate, any activism is better than doing nothing. Don’t be silent while society crumbles around us.
