Embrace Your Geekness Day – July 13th
Being a lifetime member of the geeky persuasion, I was actually surprised and delighted to find out about a holiday all about me (and other geeks); Embrace Your Geekness Day. As I mentioned in a previous article, there are celebrations and holidays for just about any occasion, being a geek included, it seems. So, you may be asking, how did this special day come about?
According to Geek.com, this fun holiday was created by a whimsical site, Wellcat Holidays, that celebrates and lists just about every oddball holiday out there. While more historical information hasn’t been found, it seems the founder of the site, Thomas Roy, an American film, TV, and voice actor, came up with the idea, stating, that if you’re “…into dungeon games, comic books, and cosplay…” this is your day to celebrate.
So, what does being a geek really mean? According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, a geek
- is a person often of an intellectual bent who is disliked
- an enthusiast or expert especially in a technological field or activity
- a carnival performer often billed as a wild man whose act usually includes biting the head off a live chicken or snake (!!! Ozzy Osborne?)
Yes, this definition is laughable for the most part, and relatively dated. Definition 3 was indeed a new one on me. Urban Dictionary gave a more modern interpretation. They define a geek as someone who is generally not athletic and enjoys video games, comic books, being on the internet, etc. To me, being a geek is all of these things (except the carnie…whoa!) and being passionate about them and more.
There are computer geeks, science geeks, literature geeks, the list goes on and on. The term has morphed more into being an avid fan or follower of a particular subject. Or if you’re like me, just a pure, full-fledged geek about most things. (Maybe that’s a nerd? That’s a topic for another day.) Just explore your passions and geek out.
So, whether you’re devoted to all things Marvel Comics, Doctor Who, World of Warcraft, cosplay, or astronomy, make this July 13th your special day to embrace your geeky passions and celebrate you or your geeky friend. Buy them a comic or video game, they’ll love you for it.
