The Watch Part 3
The longer he held on the less feeling she had in her hands. Slowly the chill crept up her arms, and soon she felt the cold grip on her shoulders.
“Let go,” she managed to whimper, but instead of releasing his grasp, the figure held tighter and leaned in so his white eyes were less than an inch from her brown ones.
Veronica tried to pull away but he was too strong. She leaned back as far as she could to make more space between them, but he immediately closed the gap. Again he released a rasping breath and the sweetness filled her nostrils. She thought she’d pass out from the saccharine scent and the numbness in her limbs, but instead it seemed as if she gained more focus.
Her eyes rolled back and she was transported to her childhood. Veronica watched herself playing on the floor with her dolls. She remembered feeling someone staring at her as she talked to her toys, dressed them, and made them dance. Usually in this memory she never saw him, but this time he was by the steps leading to the second floor. At first, he was the dark shadow she was accustomed to but as she focused on his presence, he started to take on a more detailed shape. Like a regular, living man.
His face was more defined and his white eyes were increasingly human. She couldn’t tell what shade the irises were but there was color. For a moment Veronica thought she saw a frown on his face as it slowly came into focus, like film developing in a chemical bath. The corners of his wrinkled mouth dipped downward the longer she stared.
There was a flash and she was 12 years old in her room doing homework. Veronica remembered this chapter of math and how much she hated it. Fractions. Not the easy kind, but the hard, complicated version that made her head hurt. That’s when she felt him behind her. First it was his sweet breath and then he leaned in to whisper in her ear. When she was 12 it was gibberish. Incoherent babbling in breathy tones. But this time, in this memory, it all was clear. For the first time she finally understood the words.
