Wild Heart Stitchery: Custom Handmade Portraits
The classic art of embroidery graced households for hundreds of years. In recent years, the art form of needle and thread has reemerged. Social media brought to light the hilarious “dirty” cross stitches. Popularity with the modern take on embroidery has risen and crafters can now sell their custom stitching on websites like Etsy and Facebook. I spoke to one “stitcher” about her growing business.
Vicki Aubele, a native to Pittsburgh, PA, started Wild Heart Stitchery in September of 2018. She explained that her first attempt was experimentation. Vicki had no pattern to guide her. The joy in creating the finished product inspired her to continue. She continued to search the internet and social media for techniques. One Instagram account, @familystitch, displayed unique thread portraits. Vicki said, “Her work really opened my eyes.” And with that, Vicki was hooked. She continued practicing and testing out new thread techniques.
Wild Heart Stitchery offers an introductory package price of $50. This includes up to four characters, family name, and one additional detail of your choice. There are no limitations to the customization. One customer recently requested a portrait twice the size of the normal package. Another needed a character with curly hair. “I really wanted to capture the curls, so I decided to try a completely new stitch on a whim,” she explained. Vicki is able to achieve any likeness using different embroidery techniques.
A standard portrait can take anywhere between 4-6 hours to complete. This makes the $50 package more than fair. Wild Heart Stitchery provides something unique to display in your home and a possible heirloom to pass down through the family.
