Author Rue Volley recently released book one for the “13 Ways to Midnight” series and to say this book is just another YA read, couldn’t be farther from the truth. This read is in the genre of YA, but can be enjoyed by the most seasoned reader. Volley puts forth a light that you can feel through the words on the pages. She takes the vampire tale and adds her own personal twist of Gilmore Girl love, coffee addiction, and over-sized sweatshirts to the story line, making the read relateable and enjoyable.

The book’s synopsis:

Sixteen-year-old Echo Navarri, daughter of world-famous archaeologists, Alice and Peter Navarri, had spent her life traveling from one expedition to the next as her parents unearthed lost civilizations.
On their thirteenth dig, Midnight, Echo’s twin sister, disappears without a trace. This prompts a year-long search that leaves the family nearly broken.
In an attempt to find closure they reluctantly host a mock funeral for Midnight without ever discovering her remains.
Nearing the one year anniversary of Midnight’s assumed death, Echo is sent to live with her eccentric Aunt Luna who is the caretaker of the centuries old Navarri Estate in Port Royal, Maine.
Echo attempts to settle into her new life in Port Royal, but soon finds that she’s destined for adventure as the mystery of her family’s history, the sunless town, and its oddly intriguing people teeter on the supernatural.

Curiosity is at every corner with the whereabouts of Midnight. Could she be at Echo’s new school? Will she rise from the family’s mausoleum? Is she floating in the mist in Port Royal? As a reader, you feel the heartbreak of Midnight and Echo’s parents for the loss of their daughter and the entanglement that Echo feels loosing her sister and her parents to grief. Some parts are whimsical and others are heavy with emotion.

Watching the relationship between Echo and her Aunt Luna grow in the midst of turmoil, is the light of the story. Echo is able to accept her fate and move forward without bitterness. She learns to cope more every day and is still open to loving her family and her new friends in Port Royal. Some themes in this novel are serious and heavy, while others are fun and light-hearted, but the mix makes for something truly addictive.

The novel is an easy read and goes quickly. Volley is working on the release of book two for this series to release in September 2017.
