Born In Light VIII

Pain thrummed through my head as I slowly awoke. The world around me became lighter, and I could make out figures standing with their backs to me. I realized I laid on a bed, and voices floated around me, muted but there.

“She just passed out?” A male voice, he was concerned but surprised.

“Yes, for the hundredth time. I told her what she was, and she passed out. I was able to catch her before she hit her head. But she hasn’t woken up since then. It’s been over a day already!”

The second man seemed angry but frantic. I tried to move, but my body refused to listen to my demands. I began to get frustrated by my lack of movement when someone else entered the room.

“Headmaster Adrian?” A deep growl echoed suddenly at the intrusion, and I could barely make out the new person through my blurry vision. I couldn’t open my eyes more than a crack.

“Ethan, calm yourself for goodness sake. He’s her friend.” That must have been Adrian. Ethan was the other one then. I felt a sense of calm come from that thought, the mere idea that he was here. My mind rebelled at this, and memories of our conversation floated to the forefront of my mind.

I am his life mate. How can that be?

“I don’t want him near her.” Ethan took a step towards the new man. From our previous encounter, I assumed it was Michael.

“You seriously need to get a grip, man.” Not a smart thing to say, Michael. Not an intelligent thing at all.

“Get a grip? My lifemate is lying unconscious on my damn bed, and you want me to get a grip!?” Ethan’s voice began to rise in volume, and I knew I had to step in lest it came to blows between them.

I tried to push my voice out; to move anything. Finally, my finger twitched, then my arm shook, followed by my eyes opening fully and clearing. I saw the three of them—Ethan about to choke Michael out.

“That’s enough…you idiots.” My voice was raw, but it did the trick. The three men whipped towards me, and Ethan had me in his arms the next second.

“You scared the shit out of me, Ellie.” He nuzzled his face in my neck, and I felt him breathe me in. Must be a Dragon thing.

I watched the other two who stood behind Ethan. “I’m sorry I don’t know why that happened. I’ve never fainted before in my life.” He pushed back a bit from me and searched my eyes.

Adrian walked closer and smiled softly, “We’re glad you’re awake. As for why it happened. It might just be that you couldn’t take any more information. A lot has piled on your shoulders in a very short amount of time. A person can only take so much before their system overloads and needs a reboot.” He chuckles a little, and Ethan shoots him a glare. Adrian quickly put up his hands in defense.

Michael takes a step closer before coming to a halt at Ethan’s sudden growl. I smack Ethan’s arm, and he looks at me, confused. “Quit it, honestly.” I sigh and look at Michael. “What is it, Michael? You look like you want to say something.”

“If it’s what I think he wants to say, he can shove it so far up his-” I smack Ethan again.

“If you don’t stop, I’m going to put you out that door so that I can talk to my friend!”

Ethan glares, “Not happening.”

I glare back, “Then stop acting like a Caveman.” He huffs and grows quiet, but not before swiftly moving me onto his lap, facing the other two men. I could feel his gaze over my shoulder, pinning Michael like poisoned darts.

Michael only swallowed nervously and refused to look anywhere but me. “How are we so sure that you’re his Tether? We’ve only had his word and nothing else.”

I felt Ethan tense behind me, and his arms tightened like vices around my waist. “My word should be enough.”

Michael finally looked at the man behind me. “It isn’t.”

“Just because you want in her pants-” I cut Ethan off with that as I pulled myself from his embrace and stood.

“That’s enough! I’ve had it with this macho display of yours. Until you can learn to control your jealousy, I’m out. Alright? I’m. Out.” With that, I spun on my feet, wobbling a bit, but I refused to show any weakness as I passed Adrian and jetted out the front door. I could hear the raised voices of the men behind me. I could only imagine what Ethan was doing, and frankly, I didn’t care at the moment.

He’d gone too far, and I’d had enough. Like Adrian had said, someone can take only so much.
