After falling victim to the horrific memories of her past, Eva returned to the present. She awoke in her bed, paranoid from the events that had unfolded and the letter he had left her. The police had never found Dave after Eva escaped, and she’d thought she’d killed him. She had to come up with a plan to get rid of him for good. Should she move? Should she find a way to kill him? Was it worth risking her life to take his? The questions ran through her mind as she readied for work. She was working at a large accounting firm in the city, only a thirty-minute drive from her house. She grabbed her keys, pocketknife, and pepper spray and headed out the door. Eyes, yet again, scanning the area to ensure there was no immediate threat. She entered her car and began her drive to work. She turned on the radio, but nothing would play, only static.
“Damn thing!” She said, slapping the steering wheel.
After a few minutes, the static broke, and a voice came over the radio.
“Eva! I’ve messed with the radio system so you can hear me. Don’t bother trying to call the police; I’ll be gone before they have a chance to believe you and there’s no real evidence. Plus, I’m not working alone. I’ve missed you. Why d’you run away from me? I thought you trusted me?” David’s voice rang through the car.
The color drained from her face. She wanted to tell him to go away and leave her alone, but no words would come out of her mouth. Panic was taking over, and she began to shake. She focused on the road ahead of her, and pulled into the comfort of the parking lot, full of familiar faces.
“I told you I would hurt you if you tried to leave. Lucky for you, you succeeded. But maybe that’s not such a good thing for you, because now I won’t be so nice. I told you, you’re mine, Eva. That means you do what I want when I want. I waited long enough after you left that nobody will believe you if you tell them I’m back. They barely believed you the first time. I’m coming for you again. When you least expect it, I’ll be back. You’ll never know it, but I will get you.” The radio cut out.
What am I supposed to do? She thought. She went into work and met up with Ford, a man she’d met almost a year ago at work, and they’d taken a liking for each other. Ford was a gentle and kind man who never asked questions and never pushed her to do anything she didn’t want to.
“Hey Eva, how’s it going?” he asked as she approached him with a hot cup of tea she’d made in the company kitchen.
She handed it to him, “I could be better, but I’ll be okay. A lot on my mind today.”
Ford smiled at her, “Sorry to hear. Let’s go over those numbers for the Bronston account.”
She spent the day working with Ford and even enjoyed a lunch at their favorite restaurant, La Poulet. The thought of Dave’s voice sat in her mind all day, but she attempted to ignore it and focused on her work to clear her head. After all, was Dave a huge threat to her? She had a knife and pepper spray; she could use that against him if she wanted to. After work, Ford walked her to her car and kissed her cheek.
“Ford, I know this is a lot to ask, but could I stay with you at your place tonight?” Eva asked, not ready to go back to her house alone.
“Of course, you can, love! I would love that!” He responded. “Do you want to drive with me?”
“That would be great. But no funny business. I just want to curl up on your couch and maybe watch a movie?” she asked, as they walked toward his car.
“Fine with me.” He stated as he walked to the passenger side and opened the door to let her in. They drove off to his house, which was on the other side of the city. The thought of being far away from her house made her happy; there was no way Dave would find her there.
Eva curled up in Ford’s arms on the couch all night. They watched a few movies after dinner and fell asleep there. Ford woke her around midnight to move to the bed, where they’d be more comfortable. She lay in the bed for what felt like hours thinking about Dave, but; the memories changed to a happier note. Ford had fallen asleep almost immediately, and she was happy that he had not tried to have sex with her. She wasn’t sure whether or not she was ready for that step in their relationship. They’d gotten close, but she’d always pulled away before it happened. Ford didn’t seem bothered by this and gave her space. That’s what she loved about him. Then shock overcame her when she realized that she was in love with Ford.
I wonder if he feels the same about me? A smile overcame her, and she fell asleep thinking of the happy times they had shared.
