Carnivals and fairs pop up throughout the land. Why not? After all, it is summer and no school. It is time to let loose, and for many, on a hot summer night in eighty-seven, it meant sneaking into the local theater. Who could resist the call of the Ferris wheel on the big screen? Nope, that was not it. Maybe it was the call of the beach, a fun park with rides, food, video stores, and comic books?  Nope, but it is all the above, along with a muscle-bound saxophone player who “still believes.” Plus, four, forever young, teenage boys who are “lost in the shadows,” snatching up children, adults, and those pesky couples who steal comic books. The stories of the creatures of the night sky are alive to this day, the way we like it.

But, summer turns to fall, and many moons pass. Until one day, fall leaves sway to the ground, and the warm air turns crisp. All Hallows Eve is twenty-four days away. But, why wait, “Something Wicca This Way Comes,” this chilly night in ninety-eight. And to this day, we are still under their spell. The sisters three charmed their way into our homes and hearts until… On a cool spring night in May twenty-o-six, a network cast a vanishing spell.

A few years back The CW conjured a time-traveling device to send viewers back to the seventies. We were to spend time with the matriarch of the family, Penny, and her daughter, Patty. It would not have been bad to watch. We would have learned how the two women fought demons and handle love lives while raising the Charmed Ones. It was during this time; the network was to use their device on another group of supernatural creatures. Transporting us to the beginning and watch seven centuries in seven years of a gang of vampires. Both fell through.

The network tried to cast a memory charm on us by recreating our sister witches. No longer our beloved Halliwell’s, or their children, but Vera’s. Mel and Maggie Vera and their half-sister Macy Vaughn formed a new Charmed unit. Of course, this is not what the fans wished for. Once again, our voices tuned out by the powers that be. All we wanted, all we ever asked for, were the children. Continue the storyline with them.

The CW Charming The Lost Boys

Charmed is a reboot, not a prequel or a sequel. So, how is CBS and Warner Brothers charming The Lost Boys? Remember the time-traveling device to send us back to the seventies with Charmed, keep that in mind.

Way back in 2016, The Hollywood Reporter journalist, Lesley Goldberg reported The Lost Boys re-imaging “… the film over seven seasons (and 70 years) with each frame covering a decade. In success, the first run will be set in San Francisco during 1967’s so-called Summer of Love. Each season will see the humans, setting, antagonist, and story all change. Only the vampires — AKA the Lost Boys — will remain the same.” Hate to pull out your fangs, but this scenario is not happening.

In late January 2019, Deadline journalist, Nellie Andreeva, gave the 1987 vampire fans a different take. The CW is going through with The Lost Boys series, but not the anthology scenario as previously reported.

Andreeva says, “While (Rob) Thomas has been busy with his Veronica Mars reboot for Hulu, a take by writer Heather Mitchell (Scandal, Grey’s Anatomy) got everyone excited, and the new incarnation picked up steam this development season.”

Andreeva posted the “Logline: Welcome to sunny seaside Santa Carla, home to a beautiful boardwalk, all the cotton candy you can eat… and a secret underworld of vampires. After the sudden death of their father, two brothers move to Santa Carla with their mother, who hopes to start anew in the town where she grew up. But the brothers find themselves drawn deeper and deeper into the seductive world of Santa Carla’s eternally beautiful and youthful undead.”

Many people are excited to see this, yes, I am too, but the movie is rated R. Will the network PG down the series? Will they dramatize it, more drama less horror? And the biggest question of them all. Who, among the vast array of thespians, are worthy enough to take up the mantle of David and his gang (includes Laddie and Star), Michael, Sam, Grandpa, Lucy, Max, Nanook, and, most important, who will fight for truth, justice, and the American way while their parents, in the back of the comic book store, stoned?

The reboot of our favorite non-sparkling vampires can wipe away The Tribe and The Thirst, and possibly the comic book line. Are we ready for that? Okay, most of you would love to see the first two burn up in the sun, but The Thirst was (is) a good segue to the world of werewolves.

The Lost Boys series, like Charmed, went from the past straight to reboot. In other words, what CBS and Warner did to Charmed, they are doing to The Lost Boys.
