Equality

Equality is a word that exists in a world where all things are not equal. Of course, there are men and women, children and teens, young and old. There isn’t anything equal about those seemingly symmetric titles. Since the cave-dwelling days, men have gone out and done the strenuous work. That’s not because the women couldn’t but women tended the cave, children, and went out into the fields picking greens, herbs, berries and such.

Personally, I believe women were the first farmers and then men decided to take over. Like they could do it better. In fact, I think that maybe Adam ate the apple first then blamed it on Eve. Just a thought.

I don’t profess to know all the problems that exist when dealing with equality, I’m just stating things as I interpret it. With all the inequality, I wonder if the suffrages are barking mad in their graves at the rights they thought they fought for. Women are viewed as weak, soft, fragile and dumb. We are so much smarter than that.

So many strides have been made and women are now in almost every job, sports, even Boy Scouts (don’t get me started on that). It’s high time women in sports were paid their just due. Those ladies have proved they deserve it ten times over. Working in the corporate world isn’t any better. The ‘Boys Club” will always exist. They are just better at hiding it. So they think. For a woman just trying to get ahead in the world and possibly do what she loves, is a chore.

Let’s push the equality envelope further. You think women have it bad. So do people of color, immigrants, religion, gays, and lesbians. This list can go on and on. When you break things down more than just women suffer.

It is so hard for a person of color to get ahead. It’s like being at the back of the bus rushing to get out of the only entrance at the front. It’s not that they don’t want to, it’s just they have further to go. That analogy can fit anyone trying to fight for equal rights. Why is being different so hard to accept in this world?

So what if I want to wear purple hair and a tongue ring. If I know how to do my job efficiently that is all that should matter. If, at the end of the day, I have brought in more business, more fans, more likes and good reviews. Then my job should have the value it deserves no matter what type of person does it.

It is so unfair the level of inequality that exists. I hope one day I live long enough to see women getting equal pay and treatment. I long for this moment and I know it won’t be ready during my daughter’s time. I hope that my future granddaughters will benefit from a world that understands equality. I hope women don’t have to continue to fight and prove they are as strong as any man.

We are smart, strong, fragile, soft, resilient and determined. If everyone embraced just one human trait, RESPECT one another. Then I believe we would all get along a lot better. I don’t have to like you, but I can respect you to get the job done. So, let’s get this equality thing going so women and everyone affected by it can enjoy what they do without the worry.
