Fading Memories

Your thoughts hold memories
a time too far for mine to grasp
Your heart is so full of wisdom
experiences you openly share.

Your eyes tell the stories
both of joy and sorrow
Your skin, a map of your life
each line holding a memory
buried in your soul.

The cruelty of life has overtaken you
the memories have begun to fade
Yet your heart remains full of compassion
your skin, still the most beautiful landscape
I have seen.

Your thoughts erasing
taken from deep in your soul
One day your thoughts will
not hold a memory, your eyes
all the stories will be gone

Those memories you shared
are now in my every thought
The stories you have told
will now be heard, through
the version my eyes will tell.

Your beautiful life, now upon my face
a near-empty canvas to hold more memories
Still, your lessons of compassion and faith
overflow from your heart to mine
to pass along.

Life’s cruelty has overshadowed your soul
but to me, it is a gift of time, from God
Time to reminisce, to share, to love
A time not many are given, yet
God gave it to us.

So, I will take every moment in time
not letting a single one pass
To enjoy this beautiful gift we have been given
before time is gone and memories
are erased forever.

Ruth Cowan

At a very young age, I found myself lost in the world of books. Through my love of reading, I developed a love for writing. Throughout my life, I have found myself inspired by the life experiences of others and now uses my own life experiences in my writing in hopes of inspiring others the way I was. Using my degree in English and creative writing, I write primarily nonfiction. I believe the way to help others is by sharing our real-life experiences. Being open and honest is the best way to do so. I live by the idea that we are all interconnected, and the more we live by this, the less we will feel alone. Being a mother of six and grandmother of five, I have learned that nothing is certain, and there are surprises around every corner both good and bad. Through the surprises and uncertainties in life, there is always a lesson to be learned and these lessons can and should be shared with others as a way of inspiring them, through compassion and empathy while bringing some hope to them. Faith and family are the largest part of who I am, and why I strive to be the best I can be. I work hard to leave a legacy, especially for my grandchildren.
