Forward and Backward: A Poem

One foot
in front of the other.
Moving with no destination in mind.
Sometimes going forward, often walking backward.
One foot
in back of the other.

I watch myself move in this awkward shuffle.
Less like a dance.
More like stumbling.

One foot
in front of the other.
It doesn’t matter which way I face.
Wanting to go one way I walk in the opposite direction.
One foot
in back of the other.

Forward, backward,
Awkward shuffle.
Where do I go from here?
