Happy Heavenly Birthday : An Open Letter To My Best Friend And Sister
This is a letter to my best friend and sister, Eloisa Vanessa Flores, who passed away in February of 2017. I write this is in honor of her birthday August 19, 2020.
I wanted to write this letter to wish you a Happy Heavenly birthday!
I cannot believe this is the fourth year without you on this day. August 19th was always a time to celebrate, but it has been somber since you passed.
However, I cherish the memories of those birthdays past in which the three of us: you, me and Francis, spent so much time talking about the cake you got every year.
I loved how, even when it was your birthday, you always found a way to give to others. It did not matter that it was your special day, you always took the time to appreciate everything. It was never about the gifts for you—all you ever wanted was to be around those you loved.
How I wish we could have celebrated more birthdays together. I know things changed after I moved to North Carolina. Even from far away I would be able to talk with you and giggle about the times of old and the silly things we would get ourselves into.
I recall the one birthday we all sang some songs together. Karaoke was just something we loved to do. I can still hear you singing the tunes from the Grease 1 and Grease 2, while we added a bit of Linda Ronstadt duetting with Aaron Neville, and some Mariah Carey too. All those birthdays were special indeed, and there isn’t a day that passes that I don’t think of them.
Well, my dear sister, I wanted you to know that I think of you every day—we all do. The other day I was talking to Francis and she brought up your upcoming birthday. She teared up, as I do daily, thinking of you, especially on this day.
Now I will leave you on this note, I know one of your all time favorite movies, as well as mine, was the original Beaches with Bette Midler and Barbara Hershey. We loved it because of the strong bond and friendship of these two women, who meet as kids under the boardwalk one day. For me one of my favorite songs was The Glory of Love.
I will leave you with this line from the Beaches Soundtrack:
“As long as there is the two of us, we got the world and all its charms, and when the world is through with us we got each other’s arms.”
We will always have that my best friend and sister. Happy Heavenly Birthday!
Love your sister always,
