Heart History Of Love

My valentine, my heart.

The history marks my soul.

St. Valentine a mystery, legend or myth?

A Pagan festival to celebrate in centuries of old,

Lupercalia was its name.

With hides of goats to slap the fields and maidens of the town,

sacrificial blood was spread on both

in hopes fertility be found —

with bounty of food and family future.

Or romance celebration,

a poem written most tenderly,

Charles, Duke of Orleans, in 1415 did express,

a valentine of love endured —

to his wife an imprisoned wretch!

In times now recent, the love that’s shown,

be cards of Hallmark ready-made.

Though history has changed

the method used,

love need not diminish less feelings the heart bemoans.

By card or flowers, poem or voice

the expression cries out the same —

My valentine, for your heart.
