Opinion Piece

Dedication: For my daughter, a strong young woman with a beautiful mind of her own.

That’s right; I’m a woman; a sis gender female, a daughter, a sister, a mother and a wife (so many labels). But I’m also something much more, a human being with thoughts, feelings, and creative ideas. I was born into this world like everyone else.

I live in the United States of America. Since I am skeptical of both Republican and Democratic politicians, I have no political party affiliation. My distrust doesn’t stem from recent events. I registered as an Independent voter over two decades ago, and I’m proud of that decision.

Despite my non-Party status, I am accused of being a “women’s libber,” and a “liberal.” To these two labels I say, if being concerned with drastic environmental changes, equal rights for people of every creed, race, and sexual orientation, a rigorous public education for all children, the misogynistic views of certain politicians, Trump’s worldview agenda, the media consumption or lack thereof regarding Trump’s staunch supporters, and the staggering gun violence rate, then yes, I am!

If these two labels make me a nasty woman, that’s even better because I will only get nastier. I never want my daughter to look at me with disappointment and say why didn’t you do something when our country was caught up in such a political and social crisis?

The November 2018 elections are five months away. I call on every American citizen to vote against a political party that lashes out against women and criticizes their appearance, who supports accused child molesters, denies scientific facts, attacks our First Amendment rights, and stays silent while our closest allies are insulted.

I am fed up with the Trump news cycle. I am fed up with insulting early morning tweets. I am fed up with watching our country ostracizing itself from the world stage.

Enough is enough!

Ellwyn Autumn

Ellwyn Autumn is an American author/blogger and a certified teacher with a Master's Degree in Education. She writes children's picture books, middle-grade novels, and Young Adult fiction. Ellwyn's first self-published novel, Chris Kringle's Cops The First Mission, was a Finalist in the 2016 Reader's Favorite International Book Contest. Her Kamyla Chung picture book series addresses difficult issues facing young children. Ellwyn discovered her passion for writing in second grade when she had to write a book report for school. She was so excited to write the report, until her mother told her that she had to write about someone else's book and not her own story. Ellwyn became indignant and decided that once she finished the book report she would most certainly write her own original story. She has been writing ever since! Ellwyn lives with her family in Pennsylvania. She loves all things magical, curling up with a good book, writing stories, and almost anything with chocolate in it.
