An Open Letter to My New Puppy

Hi Sweetheart,

It’s funny how life goes on sometimes. God gives you just the thing that you needed when you didn’t know you needed it. I’m going to thank god every night for letting you into my life. Our paths crossed for a reason; we both needed each other. I love you, baby!

You aren’t just a puppy to me. You’re my best friend.

Despite only knowing you for a short time, having you in my life has made me a better person. Having to take care of you has given me a sense of purpose that I have never experienced. I’ve always wanted to be needed; you need me to fill your food bowl; you are literally the reason I get out of bed on my worst days.

I named you Dylan after Bob Dylan, one of the musicians I listen to when I’m sad. You bring me so much comfort.

I love your playful spirit. You’re so curious about the world around you.

Puppy, thank you for being my real-life plushie, keeping me warm and safe while we nap. It’s been so long since I felt safe. Watching you sleep and dream makes me sleep better.

Because you need me to provide for you, it’s my driving force to get good grades and further my writing career. I want to give you a good life and take you on adventures.

Soon, the two of us will begin training so we can go anywhere. You will be able to run, play, and sniff new things. We can take walks together, and as a result, I will be more active and get stronger.

Your magnetic energy will force me to get out of my shell because everyone you meet wants to pet you. I’m so excited to see what’s in store for us.

Mommy loves you, baby.
