Millennial Drive By

I keep seeing a trend towards bashing millennials. A lot of it I laugh at since it sounds like someone’s parents saying “in my day we did things this way.” It’s either that or saying millennials are lazy and/or greedy.
I could understand if we were sticking up people for every good deed we did, but just wanting recognition and a pay raise for doing above and beyond work is not being greedy. Neither is expecting that your employer pay you enough to live on. You try to say more of us live at home than don’t, but, for those living at home, it is a combination of cost of living and student loans.
It feels more like the previous generations are afraid of millennials succeeding at changing society like they attempted to do. In the end, maybe the previous generations fell into complacency. They then project what their parents had projected onto them onto millennials.
As millennials move to change how things work in society, previous generations push back harder out of fear–a combination of fear and stubbornness–rather than admitting they might be wrong about some things.
In all fairness, though, millennials can be just as stubborn if not more stubborn than previous generations. Plus, they have the fact that the economy works in their favor for changing things since they are not fresh off a world war. This makes it easier to call for change in our society.
Millennials realized early on that things would have to change. That might be because they were taught to pay attention to what was going on worldwide early on instead of just what was going on close to home, possibly giving them an understanding that the way things worked was already changing. Maybe it is time to let more millennials have the reins since we face more of the consequences. Give us a chance to bring in the future.
