Study Tips From a Grad Student
Student life can be overwhelming for anyone! I wanted to share some tips that have helped me focus on my studies while working on my masters. I wish I had many of these tricks up my sleeve while pursuing my undergrad degree. My grades and my self-esteem have definitely improved while pursuing my masters.
1. Are you a morning bird or a night owl?
It’s vital to answer this question honestly. Being aware of the answer to this question and knowing the time of day that you feel most energized will help you find the appropriate time to study.
2. Vibe to your favorite song.
Playing a piece of music on repeat can help you keep focused. Playing the same song on loop works best when studying.
3. Have you ever heard the phrase, “The only stupid question is the one you don’t ask”?
Write it down if you haven’t been lucky enough to hear this phrase. This phrase has been vital to my education. Asking questions that you have will help you understand the course material better.
4. Please, don’t be too hard on yourself.
You are only human! All Humans make mistakes; having a low grade or two isn’t going to be the end of the world. Remember to correct your errors and use the times you messed something up as an opportunity to learn.
5. Imposter syndrome is your enemy!
Imposter syndrome is a misguided belief that an individual is not as good as someone else. Everyone has strengths and weaknesses, but going in knowing your strengths and knowing that everything isn’t an equal playing field with opportunities will help you succeed
6. Find your interest!
It’s impossible to be interested in every class you take in school, but focusing on areas of interest will increase your desire to participate in class and focus on schoolwork. Being passionate about something always helps.
