The Watch Part 7
“No,” she said to Keres.
The demon looked at her, confused yet intrigued by her bravery. “No?”
Veronica stepped closer to him. His stench was unbearable, but she had to show him no fear if this was going to work.
“You’re not taking my soul today.”
The laugh started deep in his chest and rumbled up into his throat before escaping out of his large maw. Keres threw his head back, his whole body shaking as he cackled at her defiance.
“Child, do you really think you have a choice?” he managed to say between chuckles.
“Yes,” she said, never flinching, never showing how frightened she was even to attempt this.
“I’m intrigued,” the demon purred.
Veronica paced the room as she spoke. Part of her was afraid he’d notice her nerves, and the other part wanted to keep a safe distance in case her plot failed and she needed to run. As if running would save her, but she’d fight until the end.
Veronica began, “I want to make a deal.”
Keres stared at her, his eyes narrowing trying to find the trick in her words. He stepped slowly toward her, bringing himself to his full height, just in case she forgot with whom she was dealing.
“You,” he said slowly, the amusement in his voice loud and clear. “You want to make a deal with me.”
“Isn’t that your whole gig? What you do? And if I’m remembering the stories correctly don’t demons have to entertain humans who want to make a deal?”
“You don’t make all the rules, you know,” he laughed.
“I know what a deal is,” Veronica stated. “It’s just like any other negotiation. Any other contract. So?”
Keres crossed his massive arms and tilted his head to the right. His eyes looked down on her as he nodded.
“Good,” she said, trying to hide the shaking in her voice. “Here’s my offer. You let me live out my natural life, whatever that may be, without any interference. When it’s my time, you can collect my soul plus the one next to me.”
Keres stood quietly for what seemed an eternity. Veronica kept talking.
“Whether I’m surrounded by grandchildren or a murderer, you end up with two.”
“So I take you and one more next to you, whoever that may be.”
Veronica nodded, “Do we have a deal?”
Keres nodded in assent. Veronica grinned.
