I. Freckles

Sun kissed constellations

Over a landscape of imperfect skin.

Telling the stories of a past

spent outside in the summertime.

Your skin

Is a map of the cosmos.

Imperfections are just stardust and light

Moving through time and space.

Your entire being is a universe in itself.

And it is beautiful.

II. Phases of Love

You have loved me in every phase:

Waxing, waning, new, and full.

You’ve never tried forcing me to be something different:

the sun or a star.

You have seen all of me, good and bad.

My dark side has only been exposed to you.

Your natural disasters are caused by my pull and power,

But you still think I am beautiful.

You stand steady in my wreckless gravity.

You have explored my craters with care.

You have loved me in every phase:

Waxing, waning, new, and full.

I don’t want to conform to everyone else’s standards.

I want to be my true self.

You’ve never tried forcing me to be something different:

the sun or a star.

In the midnight sky I can be your light,

Or I can hide so you can see all of the stars.

You have seen all of me, good and bad.

My dark side has only been exposed to you.

I am the moon, and you the earth.

I effortlessly follow your magnetic presence.

Your natural disasters are caused by my pull and power,

But you still think I am beautiful.

***

III. Drive

We spend the rest of the night chasing the moon until it’s too low on the horizon to see. From there, we take turns choosing which exits to pass or take. It doesn’t matter where we are going.

We aren’t going anywhere in particular at all. But we’re together, and that’s enough.

Each night the slice of light in the sky shrinks to the size of a sliver. The light guiding us to unknown destinations grows even smaller. Hand in hand we drive and laugh and cry and sing. We will become our own beacon.

When the moon is new again and the sky is only stars, I wait for your guiding light to show me the way home.
