What About My Rights?

As I was scrolling through the news this morning, like I do every morning, I froze when I saw an article about New York State allowing abortions up until birth. I thought for sure it had to be fake news, but as I researched more into it, I was wrong. It was as real as the air I breathe.

The Reproductive Health Act “updates the state’s abortion laws for the first time since 1970. It will allow abortions to be performed by an authorized practitioner within the first 24 weeks of pregnancy, or if the fetus isn’t viable, or at any time if patient’s life or health is at risk.”

Now I am not here to judge anyone. I am not here to push my beliefs on anyone either. We all have the right to believe what we want. As a woman, I would not want the choice I make for my own body to be taken away from me, but what so many fail to see are the rights of the unborn babies.

We all have our own beliefs about when human life begins. We all have our own views about what is considered morally right. My concern is that we are headed down a slippery slope with this new law. I can assume that we all understand what would be considered something putting a woman’s life at risk, but “health risk” is a very broad term.

My worry is that completely healthy babies that will be aborted. Think about it for a minute. This law allows abortions up until birth if the woman’s life or health is at risk. Medical advancements allow babies who are born very premature to survive outside the womb, so why abort a baby that has the potential to survive?

Two of my daughters were born pre-term. One at 36 weeks and one at 32 weeks. Both were born healthy with little to no medical intervention. Other than being tiny little human beings, they were perfect. They have grown up to be beautiful, strong, and determined women.

We also know there are many women looking to adopt. In the cases of women who are contemplating a late-term abortion of a healthy baby, why not consider adoption? I just cannot fathom aborting a baby in the third trimester. Anyone who has been pregnant knows that by that time you reach the third trimester, you already feel your baby moving and kicking. There are real signs of life.

I understand that a woman may have health reasons to end a pregnancy in the last trimester. What I don’t understand is why choose to abort a healthy baby if they are able to survive outside the womb? I just can’t seem to wrap my head around it. There are other choices.

Pregnancies may not always be planned. Even the ones that are, don’t always go as planned. There are many options that should be considered. For more information about those options, click here.

Ruth Cowan

At a very young age, I found myself lost in the world of books. Through my love of reading, I developed a love for writing. Throughout my life, I have found myself inspired by the life experiences of others and now uses my own life experiences in my writing in hopes of inspiring others the way I was. Using my degree in English and creative writing, I write primarily nonfiction. I believe the way to help others is by sharing our real-life experiences. Being open and honest is the best way to do so. I live by the idea that we are all interconnected, and the more we live by this, the less we will feel alone. Being a mother of six and grandmother of five, I have learned that nothing is certain, and there are surprises around every corner both good and bad. Through the surprises and uncertainties in life, there is always a lesson to be learned and these lessons can and should be shared with others as a way of inspiring them, through compassion and empathy while bringing some hope to them. Faith and family are the largest part of who I am, and why I strive to be the best I can be. I work hard to leave a legacy, especially for my grandchildren. My take on this is for the women who were previously forced to carry dead babies to term. Without this law women would still have to carry those dead children to term no matter when they passed. I am pro choice, and would likely never choose abortion except in extreme circumstances. Abortions are very expensive, especially at late term. Will some likely abuse this? Probably. But I believe those cases are extremely rare, and for those who need this, to not have to risk themselves carrying something no longer living, I believe it’s a good thing.

This is just my view on it and everyone is allowed to have their own opinions. I do wish adoption was an easy process, but it has so many strict requirements, and is extremely expensive, so it is not always a choice for people. And some children stay in the system and are poorly treated. I really wish it wasn’t that way. I feel for those children, and personally wish I could adopt at least one child in my life.
