My eyes are wide awake
Looking at the sunlit sky
As the sun begins to set
My shadow leaving me
In solitude among the dark

Racing thoughts escape
My sleep deprived mind
As a million what if
Thoughts snatch my attention
Than any of the stars could do

They bounce and echo
Creating a catatonic state
Leaving me at their mercy
As the noise alone
Is louder than the silence

I cry empty tears
Numb and cold
To our last spoken words
Before you left me
Alone with my paranoia

Don’t you remember our binding vow?
A vow that said we were
To stay by each other’s side
Never to part
Never to leave ourselves to our demons

Have you forgotten about us?
How we have laughed and
Played as we spoke in
Gossip of who is cool and popular
Talking about cute boys in secrecy

A type of secrecy we upheld
As we swore on pinky promises
That none of us would change
Or dared to become the hungry mob
Of those who forgot the secret to life

The secret that stitched best friends
Together forever in the
Darkest places of human hearts
As the world continues to burn
Everything helping us to live freely

Tell me friend,
When have we let the fire
Burning everything holy and pure
Consume what makes us human
Destroying what kept us close

Because you changed

You’ve changed into a person
I have repeatedly escaped
Just to keep myself whole
To keep myself sane among evil monsters

Wicked monsters that promise
True friendship and safety
Among the horrors of the world
But are so caught up in worldly politics
In their own mindset of being right

You became that monster

The monster that smothers me
With opinionated advice
Meant with best of intentions
Trying so hard in keeping me close
Suffocating me to death

I get my hopes up
Against all odds
Remembering us
Fighting off the flames of evil
To preserve what kept us whole

But life does not work that way – does it?

My eyes are wide awake
Looking at the sunlit sky
As the sun begins to rise
My shadow returning
To my side where you’re not
