Make Galentine’s Day a Tradition Next Year

Valentine’s Day is officially over. People either love or hate the holiday of love; for me personally, I do enjoy the holiday and I love spending time with my guy, but I wouldn’t be heartbroken if the holiday disappeared. But it’s the day before that I totally look forward to. I absolutely love my girlfriends. And even though I celebrate them all the time, February 13th or “Galantine’s Day”, is a day that I’ve tried my hardest to reserve to specifically focus on my badass friends.
Galentine’s Day is a pretty young holiday, but its popularity has grown over the years – there’s now a Galentine’s Day card section at Target. But there may be some of you that still don’t know what Galentine’s Day is, especially if you’ve never watched Parks and Rec. It’s a holiday that main character Leslie Knope created to celebrate her girlfriends in all their glory:
Oh, it’s only the best day of the year. Every February 13th, my lady friends and I leave our husbands and our boyfriends at home, and we just kick it, breakfast-style. Ladies celebrating ladies. It’s like Lilith Fair, minus the angst. Plus, frittatas.
On the show, Galentine’s Day is typically celebrated during brunch, since that’s Leslie’s favorite meal. But most of us don’t live in a world where we have the same schedule as our friends, so try celebrating in a way that’s best for everyone. Fresh out of ideas? I got you covered, here are some of my favorite ways to celebrate Galentine’s Day next year.
- Brunch
Breakfast foods and day drinking… do I need to say anything else to convince you?
- Slumber Party
Remember how fun slumber parties used to be when we were kids? Now imagine that same giddy energy, but with wine involved. This is on my Galentine’s Day bucket list. Want to make it even more fun? Have the party on the 12th and follow it up with a traditional Galentine’s Day brunch.
- Spa Day
It doesn’t have to be super luxurious, hell a mani/ pedi would work out fine as well. This is definitely a go- to if you can’t fit pampering into your schedule normally.
- Gift Exchange
Gifts aren’t necessary for Galentine’s Day, it’s just something that I like to do. Since it’s become more popular, I started buying cards for each person in attendance, and I write something that I admire about them. It’s not much, but it’s a thoughtful gesture.
- Vacationing
This is another one I want to cross off my list. If you have the means available, why not take a mini vacay?
Ideally, it would be great if we could do this with our girls every single day, hell, maybe even once a week. But, as we get older, life gets in the way and it becomes difficult to stay in touch with our friends, our true soulmates. I love my girls and I celebrate their accomplishments every day, I hope you do the same. And as Leslie says, “uteruses before duderuses.”
