Self-Care is Productive

It’s been a chaotic few weeks. I had to find a new psychiatrist in two days due to insurance issues after feeling like I was making progress. I’m grateful for everything I’ve learned, but change is hard. Especially when you made progress, and you realize the techniques that helped no longer work. There are new solutions, but they aren’t second nature. Music doesn’t feel the same. TV is unproductive, rejection is draining.

Dealing with Your Inner Critic

Something I attempt to do now is collaborate with my self-doubt. I’ll tell them, “We won’t get anything done if we just sit here.” This helps me get started on a task and then I can give myself the reward of getting to watch my comfort shows. Proving someone wrong about a goal you achieved is the most satisfying feeling in the world. Your inner critic could run at full force because you are hungry, or tired.

Take Shortcuts Where You Can

Our bodies know what they require to function. Are you tired and hungry? Opt for a small snack, like an apple or yogurt. This will give you some energy without having to eat or prepare anything. Feeling lazy to change into pajamas? Wear an oversized T-shirt and watch a movie you’ve seen a million times, so if you fall asleep you don’t need to worry about missing anything.

Productivity = Survival

Sometimes, recharging and trying again tomorrow is the most productive thing to do. Life is not a smooth journey for anyone. People have difficult times, lose loved ones, and make mistakes. It’s fine to occasionally show up and give your best effort. Don’t beat yourself up for being human.  Life is messy. There is no manual for success. It’s different for everyone.  Give yourself grace, tomorrow is a new day to thrive.
