one look is all we need
to see the depth of someone’s greed
the chains to which they bide their time
that ensnared their souls to the ground below

look at you now with your Midas touch.
that color that surrounds you
once shown so bright
but it’s faded over the years

is this what’s important to you?
this thing you call a fortune?
it’s not even the right color anymore
no, it’s so dull and worn

think of all the riches ’round
that kinds and dignitaries abound
now we are stuck with this,
this lasting nothingness

we see it in the jewelry now
only it doesn’t hold the same value
that burnished shade of gold
that used to be more.
