Southern Heat

The sun’s rays fire heat

                                                All through the southern town

                                                Steam begins to rise

                                                From the heating asphalt ground

                                                The sadistic sun targets

Every person on the street

To become the victims

Of the southern summer heat

                                                Skin burns and flares

                                                While futile sweat beads fall

                                                And dry up immediately

                                                Again, and again

                                                All the fountains are broken

                                                All the pools are dry

                                                And all the air conditioners

Burnt out after going too high

                                                People all over the town

                                                From young to old

                                                Faint and yell out

                                                Praying for cold

                                                Suddenly grey clouds appear

                                                Blocking the sun

                                                Who scowls and yells,

“Dammit, I’m starting to have fun!”

                                                And rain comes through

                                                The people rejoice

                                                Their wishes have come true

They save the water in buckets

For the next hundreds of days

                                                When the sadistic sun

                                                Comes back to play.
