A hero’s romance

Romantic surprise

I thought he would never change
A man of a strong, bold bravado
To match his towering stature.

We met in days of childhood,
He never cared for me then
A young and naive schoolgirl.

I knew not how ideas of romance
The world or human nature,
Can affect a meek soul like me.

The boy I knew in childhood
Showed no innate interest
Upon one of innocence.

As we grew and matured
Determined to leave a legacy,
In a cruel and careless world.

The transformation from boy to man,
Becoming gentle, kind, a loving giant
And showed immense desire.

Toward a gentle creature like me,
Beaten and weathered after years
Of life’s relentless afflictions.

He envelops me in his embrace
Within each minute of midnight’s
Horror as we shut out the world.

I drift into peaceful slumber
Within his angel wings
Confident I am safe.

The more I ponder this mystery,
Contemplate this divine conspiracy
In songs, poems and memory.

I realize this passionate love,
His bright and luminous mind
Comprises goodness within.

I see now his pure heart
Was masked by cruelty,
All in effort and vain.

A desperate attempt
To prevent the inevitable,
That tethered us together.

Creating in me a believer
Our passionate love affair
And destiny intertwined.

No one will understand
Or comprehend our story
In godless times.

Within the dark of night,
As I hold him tight,
I whisper this refrain:

“A hero to me,
Is what you
Always will be.”
