Hello Old Friend

I have always read books. The only time I remembered not enjoying reading was when I first learned how to read. I would memorize books that I had to read in the first grade so my teacher wouldn’t realize I was behind. The next thing I knew I was reading the abridged versions of classics written for kids my age. Books were my escape. The characters were friends that I could hang out with if my friends were busy. Honestly, I don’t know where I’d be without books.

I have noticed that people don’t really read anymore. They say they don’t have time, or reading doesn’t hold their interest as much as it did when they were younger. This sends me into a state of panic. I worry every day when I feel like watching television instead of reading or writing that I will never enjoy it again.

The best cure for this is a book that pulls me into the world. I want to think about these characters like I think of my original characters. Have you ever thought about your favorite characters going on a road trip? Who would drive? Who would trash the car with wrappers from the various drive-thru stops for food?

Reading may not be that interactive for everyone. I have had slumps over the years, and they are some of the darkest times of my life. The only comforting thought I have during those times is that books will always be there waiting for me. It doesn’t matter if it’s been weeks, months, or even years, the activities we love will always be a part of us even if they change to something different. It only takes the effort to take the time to do whatever it is you enjoy. The love doesn’t go away if you were busy dealing with life.

Pick up that pen, paintbrush, or whatever makes you happy. Your heart will say, “Hello old friend, It’s good to see you again.”
