Friendship in Reverse

Can you love me?
I feel
I am fading
Into a void

A void
Constantly opening wide
Their smiling jaws
With pinpointed teeth

Each bite into my skin
Reminding me how
Friendships are severed
As quick as the spark begins

Can you really love me?
People come and go
Like flickering embers
Looking promising and true

Dying as they make
Empty promises
Breaking trust
Leaving me in the cold

You will never
Be alone
One told me
Then disappeared

You matter to me
More than words can say
One told me
Then disappeared

Your mistakes are forgotten
It is all in the past
One promised me
Then disappeared

I love you my friend
I will stay by your side
One swore to me
Then disappeared

I believed every one
Of their words
Like an innocent child
Holding their hand

Once the road
Became uneven
Littered with sins
And mistakes

They decided the bond
Sworn in pinky promises
In the late nights
Was worthless as a penny

I wanted and begged
Each one to stay
Showing my valor
And loyalty

As if my words would
Somehow still matter
To break through their
Hardened hearts

As if me going through
Hell and back
Would prove why
The friendship was true

As if it would fix me
Stitch me up again
Welcoming me back
Into their heart and soul

But none of it
Among many fights
Among many mistakes
I would soon learn

Mattered to them
Or even you
As you left me
In the dark and cold

The story of us
I thought was deep and true
Like the widened sea
Stretching from east to west

Was shallow as
A kiddy pool
One-sided and
With lack of trust

Condemning me
To the flames of pain
And suffering
A monster in your eyes

When all I did
Was give us space
Time for us to heal
So we can be whole again

Can you really love me?
When you have proved
That you were done with me
At the first sign of troubled waters
