Work Can Wait

Books have always gotten me through tough times. I would sit on my bed and travel to magical lands when I wasn’t able to go anywhere. I loved to get to know all of the different characters. I think that’s what sparked my love of writing because I never had to leave my characters once the series was done.

The past few weeks I have been trying to adjust to a new schedule, and that means I haven’t left myself room to relax. This past weekend I let myself have a day where I read a book that I have been excited about since I heard about the release last year.  I was still a little stressed because I felt like I should have been doing something else. I  felt like I was seeing old friends again after a long time.

I’m not sure when this mentality of thinking about other work you have to do started, but you also have to give yourself time to relax.

Working from home can be difficult because you feel like you can never leave. It can also be hard to get motivated if you just get up, and immediately start working.

Here are a few tips that have helped me get motivated to work.

1. Have A Consistent Routine

I wake up, do my normal routine before I get in my chair, and change my shirt. It seems like a small thing, but getting ready in the morning helps me get motivated.

2. Make a schedule for everything

We scheduled everything from breakfast to workouts. My new schedule is saved in a document on Google Docs. I have a 3 hour blocks for my work tasks, an hour for lunch, and 45 minutes for a workout.

3. My roommate and I set alarms so we knew when to switch to the next task.

We had it written on a piece of paper we had taped to the wall. We had the schedule for the hours of 7:30 am-2 pm like a typical workday so we still had downtime. It helped me break up the day so I didn’t feel like I was sitting here not knowing where to start

There will always be work tomorrow, but you never know when your last day will be so you should always make time to enjoy it.
