Marching Into Spring
As we enter into March, my thoughts are turning towards Spring. It is right around the corner, right? Winter’s days are numbered. Right? I mean, how long can the snow possibly last with temperatures soaring in the high 40s? Of course, hope springs eternal – until I look at the weather forecast. High of 20 and snow. Okay, so winter isn’t over yet.
So what are the winter-weary supposed to do to trick time into moving faster? Board games have been played, movies watched, and copious amounts of popcorn and hot chocolate consumed. What could there possibly be to look forward to during this long, frustrating, last four weeks of winter?

March 1st– National Pig Day

Today is the day to make sure your pet pig is comfy and loved. To be honest, we don’t have a pet pig. But I do have some bacon in the freezer, so, yeah, BLT’s for everyone. Sorry, Wilber.
March 2nd-Dr. Seuss’s Birthday

It’s also Read Across America day. Time to break out The Cat In The Hat, The Lorax, Green Eggs And Ham, Fox in Sox, or any other of your favorites. Read ‘em loud, and read ‘em proud. You don’t have to be a kid or have any around you, to enjoy Dr. Seuss’s iconic and ground-breaking style.
March 3rd-National Anthem Day

Why not start out the day with a song? Turn up the volume in the shower and belt out “Oh, say can you see?”. Show a little pride in your country and clear the crud out of your throat at the same time. Of course, depending on your skillset, the answer you get my be, “Yeah, I can see, but now I can’t hear. Take it down a notch!”
March 4th– National Grammar Day

As an English teacher, I would be remiss in my duties if I ignored this particular day. There are grammar mistakes everywhere, every day. One of my pet peeves is the “Drive Slow” signs. Does anyone else ever want to go to the sign making people and say, “It’s ‘Drive SlowLY! It’s an adverb, people!”
March 8th– National Proofreading Day

How appropriate that Proofreading Day comes shortly after Grammar Day. It shows the importance that no matter how hard you work to improve your grammar and spelling, you still need to proofread before handing in the final draft. I’m looking at you, my dear students. This is our day to catch those pesky mistakes in writing. Bad spellers of the world, untie!
March 9th– National Fannypack Day

These were birthed into the world of fashion in the 1980s. They weren’t really stylish back then. They were more practical. However, times change and fannypacks, or waist bags if you want a more upscale label, are more popular then ever and come in all shapes, sizes, styles, and material.
March 10th– International Bagpipe Day

Everyone gather your bagpipes and meet out in the street! The bad news is that most people have no clue how to play the bagpipes. The good news is that everyone is still deaf from National Anthem Day.
March 14th– Pi Day

The English teachers got their nod, and now it’s time for mathematicians to enjoy a day created for their strengths. There may be some who have contests to see who can recite from memory the most digits of Pi, but I’ll be watching from the sidelines while eating it.
March 15th– True Confessions Day

March 20th—Won’t You Be My Neighbor Day

Fred Rogers was born on March 20th, 1928. He was a beloved children’s program producer and a compassionate man. Those of us who grew up on his program will forever have a soft spot in our hearts for his original songs and scripts. After a month of singing, confessing, excessive pie eating and bagpipe playing, it is a wonder that we have any neighbors left.
March with confidence to the end of winter by finding fun, laughter, and smiles in every day (and sometimes awkward) places. Time flies only when you are having fun.
