Leave Excuses At The Door

Excuses are the plague of my existence. Especially as a writer. I will always tell myself: “No one will probably read my work anyway so if I’m not feeling this story, that’s okay. I should just stop writing it, and move on to my next idea.” The problem with that is everyone has tough days. The words aren’t always going to flow perfectly from your brain to paper. Those days are the most important because even if you end up deleting the scene you wrote the next day you kept going.

I think the same applies to relationships as well. I think it is important to make time for the relationships in your life, even if it’s just a “Good Morning” text that just leads to “Hope you have a good day.” This simple text that probably only takes a minute to write could change the course of a person’s day. It shows that even if you haven’t seen each other in a while you still think about that person. I get life is messy. You can’t make all of your commitments all of the time, people get sick, or overwhelmed. It’s okay to say that you don’t want to do something. It’s okay to sit in your house and watch Disney movies without wearing any pants. Do whatever makes you happy.

I just think it’s also important to think about how many times you’ve bailed on that friend without making it up to them. I also want to point out it’s okay to not be friends with someone anymore. People drift apart and priorities change. It’s the natural order of things, but just like with writing every experience keeps life moving forward.

It’s just important to remember not to let your excuses stop you from living your life. Sometimes you just have to do something that you don’t want to do in order to allow a good experience to happen.

My roommate is good at reminding me of the importance of keeping your commitments. You never know when just your presence somewhere can change a person’s day. Leave the excuses in your thoughts, and enjoy what life has to offer.
