Love In Quarantine

I have been thinking a lot about the fact that a lot of people hate Valentine’s Day. I know being single on Valentine’s Day can seem lonely. I’ve always thought about it as another day to treat the people that I love. I also think it’s a good excuse to watch my favorite romantic comedies.

I have always believed that you can love your friends too. Romantic love is wonderful, but friends have always been there even before your partner. Sometimes, if you’re lucky, your friend just upgraded and become your partner. My last few Valentine’s have been spent with friends having a romantic comedy movie marathon while we eat way too many calories. I’ve always been okay with this because these are the people I love right now. Maybe next year, I’ll have a romantic partner to take me out to dinner.

I know a lot of people who read this will say, “You should show people that you love them every day, not just a random day in February.” This is true, but my question always is if you believe it should be celebrated every day then why does it bother you when people celebrate?”

I also realize the majority of people are still trying to socially distance and quarantine this year so your normal plans may not have happened this year. I have a few suggestions for a late celebration if you aren’t able to be with your loved ones.

1.Order them dinner from their favorite restaurant and maybe video chat so it’s like you are eating together.

Most restaurants have delivery or pick up options to stay open during this time. A gift card works too if you are nervous they won’t be available to get their surprise.

2.Have a watch party

Most streaming apps have the option to host a watch party. Send your loved one a link, and watch a movie together.

3. Send a care package

You could send a bunch of your loved ones favorite things and pack it in a box to send to them, or drop it off at their house if you live close by.

I also acknowledge that some people are alone, and might not have friends available to virtually spend time with them this week. My suggestion for those people is pamper yourself.

  • Go get your favorite drink from your preferred place.
  • Cook your favorite meal or pick it up.
  • Binge watch your favorite movies or shows in your most comfortable clothes.
  • Buy yourself something nice. (It never hurts to treat yourself).
  • Do an activity you love to do and relax

The spirit of the holiday is love which can include yourself. Work can wait for a weekend if you plan ahead. Love can come in many different ways. Think about the time you felt the happiest, and try to recreate that memory as best you can. Life is too short not to feel loved, even if it’s not in the most obvious of ways.
