  A swirling shell

  That holds inside

Beauty and bounty

Under the guise

Of tart apples, sweet corn,

Juicy grapes, and zesty squash

Waiting for hungry visitors

To arrive and nosh

Leaves twirl downwards

Around the banquet

But people don’t come

They tend to forget

What true beauty and bounty

Is needed for life

It comes from loving nature

Not from arguments or a carving knife

                                                            Yet animals know better

                                                            They have long ago realized

                                                            That the harvest is special

                                                            And sacred in their eyes.

                                                            Squirrels and skunks carry

                                                            Mountains of nuts

                                                            To fill every creature’s

                                                            Thankful guts

                                                            Owls and mice

                                                            Put aside their instincts

To save room for sweet pumpkins

                                                            Brought by generous minks

                                                            Beavers assist too

Bringing spare logs from their dams

                                                            To light bonfires for cooking

                                                            Sweet and tasty orange yams

                                                            Birds from far away

                                                            Stop for a bite

                                                            To take a break

                                                            From their long flight

                                                            They gather and eat

                                                            Making use of any waste

                                                            And enjoy the day together

                                                            With no desire to haste

                                                            Though it may seem odd

                                                            To our closed off minds

But that only proves that we

                                                            Have always been blind

                                                            To true beauty and bounty

                                                            That the animals possess

                                                            It’s for this reason

                                                            Their cornucopia is blessed.
