Being Multi-Passionate: A Blessing or Burden?

“So, what do you do for a living?”

A certain group of people finds such a simple question difficult to answer. Multi-passionates are individuals with many skills, talents, and ambitions who have difficulty sticking to one path. If you fit into this category, you tend to explore your vast interests, switch jobs, turn hobbies into side hustles, or start several projects at once. Nonetheless, you bring immense value to society, your profession, and yourself. You lead with curiosity, which can take you down unexpected roads and experiences, fostering growth and fulfillment. While it is a gift, there are some drawbacks, as being multi-passionate can be challenging and tiring if you don’t know how to manage it.

The Struggle of Burnout

As someone with multiple roles and pursuits, you might face challenges with time management, identity crisis, and burnout as you feel the need to catch up with everything on your plate. You feel guilty about taking breaks from working on something, whether it’s a side project or a certification course to improve your skills. If you give in to the pressure to avoid “falling behind,” it can hinder your creativity as your stress levels increase. You may wish you had a single ambition and purpose to pour all your energy into. However, with the right structure, you can achieve balance, so you aren’t spreading yourself thin.

The Importance of Balance

To keep you grounded and your ideas flowing, remember you can change and adapt according to your current situation. You don’t need to give up anything, but it is imperative to learn to manage it all. Prioritize and set boundaries for the sake of your mental clarity and to achieve your desired results. Otherwise, progressing without structure would be like swimming in the middle of an ocean with no direction.

Working in Seasons

You don’t have to do it all at once. Think of your different projects as seasonal. You can dedicate a few months to focusing on a specific thing. This way, you’ll make progress that will support your long-term goals. Consider working in seasons, according to the times most appropriate or profitable in your niche or expertise. For example, if you want to write a book, participating in National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) could give you that boost in motivation and discipline to keep at your goal of around 2,000 words per day. When you block out a period dedicated to such a project, you’ll notice more steady and consistent progress.

To avoid neglecting your other passions, don’t lose your flow. Always keep notes of any ideas you might want to act on in the future. Of course, this doesn’t mean you can’t do anything else during this period. This method helps with prioritization, so you’re not scattered across numerous things, unable to reach your full potential or desired outcome. It’s about finding a rhythm that aligns with you and your phases throughout the year.

Remember, multi-passionates are a great asset to any team. You should be proud of your love and experience in various fields. You’re able to make connections, execute concepts, and present a unique point of view to solve problems. Embrace your identity and approach what you do with intention and sincerity, but give yourself grace by resting to recharge. Allow your passions to sustain and work for you rather than consume you. When someone asks you that dreadful question, don’t shy away from listing everything you are, because you bring much more to the table than you think.
