How does someone explain to the world that they never expected to change it? That they had only hoped to find the missing part of themselves? Yet, here they stood with the world as they knew it over and gone.

From the moment that young Caleb had arrived on Sunset Island, he had known the rules and regulations. That those with dragon blood were superior and those that did not have it were not. That there were people in charge, and who to question and whom not to. These were the fundamentals of their lives.

Now as he stood here on the cliff, staring out at the people through dark amber eyes, he wondered why they kept so many secrets. Why did no one remember who he used to be? Who he was just now remembering to be.

Caleb had read and studied all the journals and texts that came along with the ritual he was participating in. He had known the touch of the right human would instantly cause the dragon to shift. That the color of the scales would be entirely left up to fate and not genetics. That much he had known. There had been one obscure text that he had found buried in the back of the library that had given him some obscure information about the past.

Now that he was experiencing it, Caleb wondered just who had written the information. There were those that were involved with the underground that kept the memory of Sebastian alive. The memory of the way things had once been and now seeing the world through new eyes Caleb understand who he was and then and now. Sebastian had merged into Caleb and Caleb had merged into Sebastian. Each knew what the other did, and now they could be stronger. In this life Caleb was the one that would come out on top, Sebastian was, after all, dead.

The utter shock spread across the face of the people standing below him tugged a moment at Caleb. This was not what he had expected when he had started this evening. He had hoped to find the human that would trigger his shift and expected to be disappointed. He did not expect to be standing there, the last to shift and the only one of his color.

One face stood out above the sea and confusion. Maximus was clearly not happy with what was going on, but there was nothing that he could do right now about it. The new king was standing there on a cliff and waiting for everything to cycle through his brain and slow down. He would survive this night and try to figure out everything tomorrow.

The only thing keeping him grounded at this very moment was the gentle hand touching his rich golden scales. This woman had changed the entire course of their world, and Caleb felt a burning desire to find out who she was and why she was the one that started this path.
