Room To Grow

Lately I’ve been thinking about endings. I’m horrible at endings in all aspects of my life. I will wait to read the last hundred pages of a book because I don’t want to leave the characters. I took seven years to read Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows. The endings I have experienced have been emotionally devastating. The thing is though that no matter what we do everything comes to an end. I guess the important thing to remember is that while things end, they make room for new things to begin. They provide us with experience to grow. A bad ending to a television show can help a writer learn what they don’t want to do to end the story.

I had a teacher once who told us to avoid getting stuck in a spiral where we would rewrite the beginning of our book over and over to try to find the perfect beginning to start the story. Her argument was always that if the original beginning doesn’t work you can fix it during revision. I feel like this can be true in matters outside of writing as well.

I know I can get stuck in patterns where I can’t seem to move forward. I usually need someone to remind me to check my attitude, and make me reevaluate how I feel.  I need to learn to allow myself to let something go.  I am excited for the New Year. I hope I can use the rest of the year to allow myself to take the steps I need to allow myself room to grow.

I hope in the New Year to finish some projects this year. Endings are extremely frustrating sometimes, but they can always help you move on to something new if you allow the possibility for change.
