Will You Accept This Submission?

I’m the type of person who hates failing. The idea of getting behind, or not turning in good quality work makes me anxious. I’ve always prided myself on being able to check in with myself. There have always been certain aspects of my personality I knew without a doubt. My “talent” as a writer is one of them. This last month has made me question whether or not that is true.

The fact of the matter is that I know certain people don’t like certain writing styles. Neil Gaiman is like that for me. I respect him as a writer, but he’s a little too wordy for me.

You can appreciate someone for what does for a community and acknowledge that they aren’t for you.

Editing is usually my favorite part, but having to do multiple rounds of edits within two days is not my favorite. I love presenting my best piece from the start. I’m okay with being edited. It’s part of being a writer. One of my teachers told me in college that if someone wants you to completely change your work you should break up with that person professionally. It makes a lot of sense.

Why change your work for someone when you can find someone else who will take it? I’m not talking about fixing minor edits, rewording awkward sentences, or making layout changes. Those edits are necessary at times to present your work in the best way possible.

Writing is a lot like dating. You may have to submit your writing to a few different places before you find your home. The thing to remember is that if you have to change everything about yourself to please someone they probably aren’t meant to be together. Growth can also hurt, but it’s important to know the difference. Life is too short not to be happy with your artistic endeavors. You will find a home one day, and it will be worth it.
