Of Lockets and Pomegranates: Chapter 13

Of Lockets and Pomegranates
Drunk. He was soย gods-damnedย drunkย andย itย took a lot for a god to get inebriated.โฏIf he wanted, heโฏcould willโฏit away.ย Thatโฏwouldย not happen. Not tonight.โฏNot after whatโฏheโdโฏjust done.โฏโฏย
Trembling fingers still ached from the heat of her immortal soul.โฏHeโdโฏsqueezed until he was sure it wouldย burst,ย butย itโฏwouldnโt.โฏImmortality madeโฏthe soulโฏimpervious to mortal wounds.โฏOnly the body remained mortal.โฏThey popped into their pantheonโs afterlife, stayed for the briefest of momentsโฏto file paperwork, and then promptly sent back to fight another day.ย Champions were never meant to stay, not even Pandora.ย Thatโsย how things were. How they were meant to stay. Even if he longed for it to be different.
It took two more swigs of the third bottleโฏheโdโฏopened to get his fingers to stop shaking. Another two for him to decide he needed a shower. Unwilling to dilute theโฏNectar, he placed it on the counter across from the shower. He wanted to keep an eye on it, as if it were a petulant child.ย
Rivulets of scalding water ran over his head, down his body, and steam clouded the air until he felt suffocated.โฏHeย sprawled himself on the tiled floor,ย proppedย against the wall, andย disassociatedย himself.โฏTime slipped beforeย thoughtsย of the night returned.โฏโฏโฏย
The feel ofโฏPandoraโsโฏbody againstโฏhim.โฏย
Nope.โฏCouldnโtโฏkeep that thought.โฏย
Theirโฏsharedโฏrelease.โฏย
Alsoโฏno.โฏย
Shatteringโฏthe locket…โฏย
Fuck. It was a mistake toโฏthink.โฏย
Herโฏfading away…โฏย
Heโฏslammedโฏhis head against the wall, wishing it would knock him out. Itโฏwouldnโt.โฏIt was just annoying.โฏStill, his thoughts persisted.โฏโฏย
Persephone had been outside the bedroom door.โฏA wickedย pain rocked through himโฏasโฏhis bodyโฏtensed,โฏandโฏhis mind seized that thought.โฏItโฏspiraledโฏdeafeningly through his head.โฏโฏโฏย
Persephone had been here.โฏย
She had seen Pandora.โฏย
Sheโฏknewโฏabout his woman.โฏย
โI wonโt say anything to anyone…โโฏsheโฏsaid,โฏher gold eyesย wideningย in horror.โฏย
No conscious thought went through him before he appeared inโฏPersephoneโs chambers, unannounced but thankfully dressed in another tailored suit. Darkness welcomed him,โฏsnappingโฏhim out of the momentary mania that consumed him.โฏโฏSilence told him that she wasn’t here.ย
Persephone was still in the Underworld; he felt her soul. He didnโt remember the last time she left the throne cavern. She stayed in her room, frequently visited his office to annoy him, and rarely entered his chambers. She wasnโt in any of those places now. ย
Reaching out with his powers, he felt the tug of her soul across his realm. Heโฏdidnโt โฏteleport there; he needed a clear mind before speaking with her. He walked, trying not to draw attention,โฏbutโฏfailing.โฏโฏย
โMy lord,โ Lamia hissed welcomingly through fangs too large for her slender face.โฏSheโฏwasโฏtragicallyโฏstunning. โฏBlindedโฏby her own handsโฏafter being cursed by Hera to kill her children, most would consider her monstrous. Hades saw through the scarred sockets andโฏsnake-likeโฏfeatures to her soul.โฏTainted,โฏbutโฏstill pure.โฏBeautiful.โฏโIt is a pleasure.โโฏโฏย
โLamia,โ heย said,โฏstifling his sigh so sheโฏdidnโtโฏsense his unease.โฏโHas a nuisance been through here?โโฏโฏย
โThe Golden Princess?โโฏย
โThatโsโฏtheโฏone.โโฏย
โShe was here about fifteen minutes ago, headed towards the residential caverns.โ Her head swiveled in the direction Persephone had headed. If heโฏdidnโtโฏknow better, he might mistake her for having sight. โShe didnโt speak,โฏbut I scented desperation on her.โโฏโฏย
โThank you,โ he said, placing a hand on her pallidโฏforearm where her scales gave way to flesh. โBe well.โโฏโฏย
He entered the open garden of the residential area, ambient light glowing from soul lights. Nyx sat at a picnic table, one hand absently stroking one of Cerberus’s three puppy-sized heads while the other two fought for attention. Her other hand was propped under her chin, eyes locked on Hypnosโs door.โฏย
Noticing Hades, Cerberus yipped and bounded over, shapeshifting to the size of a small horse. Massive paws slammed against his chest, forcing him to stumble. He caught himself quickly. Each head received deserved pets, given distractedly. Over the canineโs head, Nyx hadnโt turned her attention from the door.ย Cerberus, satisfied for now, resumed his spot beneath the picnic table. He’d shifted back to puppy size and snuggled against Nyx’s leg, three massive tongues lulling from mouths as she stroked his fur.ย ย
โSheโsโฏin there, isnโt she?โย heย asked.
The goddess nodded, slowly turning her attention toward him. โYou sent her away.โ Sheโฏdidnโtโฏneed to explain whoโฏsheโฏwas.โฏโI sense turmoil in you, Hades. Now might not be the time to walk through that doorway.ย You might not like what youย find.โโฏย
โPersephone knows about her,โ he said, his voiceโฏalmost aโฏplea.โฏโฏย
Shock twisted her motherlyโฏfeatures,โฏand a sudden burst of falling stars streaked across her skin. โWill she tell Zeus?โโฏย
โI will do whatever is necessary to keep Pandora safe. You know that, right?โโฏย
Moreโฏstarfallโฏcrossed her skin in flashes ofโฏpink and green and blue,โฏand gold. She rarely lost control of her galaxies, but she could not rein in her emotions now.โฏWhatever happened next involved her son, and thatโฏworried her.โฏHypnos had barely gotten back to his old self.โฏHe wanted to comfort her, to reassure her that Hypnos was free of the fallout, but heโฏcouldnโtโฏpromise that.โฏโฏโฏโฏย
โDonโt be cruel,โโฏshe called as he walked through the thresholdโฏto Hypnosโs chambers. He waved over his head in acknowledgement before shutting the door behind him.โฏย
***โฏย
Once the door closed, more silence greeted him. They were here. He felt them until heโฏcouldnโt. Like a rubber band snapping, their presence disappeared from his realm. Hypnos had taken Persephone to Slumber.โฏย
Giving them a moment, Hades waited. He leisurely walked to Hypnosโs bedroom.โฏCasually ran his fingers through wet paint.โฏThe streak would remain until Hypnos patched it.โฏStood before theโฏswirlingโฏgateway. He watched the pomegranate seedsโฏplinkโฏon the floor, eachโฏoneโฏaย reminder of Persephone and the misery she brought.โฏย
He stepped through the portal and caught Persephoneโs golden hair disappearing into Hypnosโs dreamscape.โฏPasitheaโs doorknob caught the light as the door began closing.โฏHe slipped in beforeโฏitโฏclosedโฏand hid hisโฏpresence,โฏaโฏnifty trick Hypnos taught him.โฏโฏย
The woman he hadโฏdesiredโฏfor centuries.โฏThe only friend he had.โฏTogether. Persephone was in Hypnosโsโฏarms,โฏtheir lips sealed together in a kiss designed to scorch the earth.โฏโฏย
He should beโฏecstatic.โฏย
If she fell for Hypnos,ย everything would be better.ย Sheโdย keep his secret. Hypnos would find love again.ย They could do cheesy double date nights and be the cutestย quadruplets.โฏโฏย
Heโฏwasnโtโฏthinking rationally.โฏย
And that was about to becomeโฏtheirโฏproblem.โฏโฏย
โDonโt mind me,โ he called,โฏunmasking his presence.โฏHeโฏfeignedโฏplayfulness as he conjured a seat to settle onto.โฏโIย loveย a good show. Do we call thisโฏLoverโs Revenge?โโฏย
The couple came apart as if โฏheโdโฏset them on fire. Gods below, that sounded like a great idea. He โฏstayedโฏhis hand, letting theโฏimpulse simmer beneath the surface of his skin.โฏNot gone, but not all-consuming.โฏย
โHades?โย theย pair spoke in unison.โฏโฏย
Wasnโtโฏthat fucking adorable?โฏโฏย
โThe one and only.โโฏHades leaned back in his chair, draping one arm over the back as he crossed his legs, ankle to knee.โฏโDid you know I have a reputation for my temper? There are scores of people who are downright horrified of me. Are you going to be the next to fear me?โโฏโฏย
โWhereโs Pandora?โโฏHypnos asked,โฏconcernโฏlacing his voice.โฏย
โI swore I wouldnโt say anything!โโฏPersephone squawked, hands flailing in front of her.โฏย
They spoke over one another, voices melding together, grating his ears as his skin crawled.โฏLifting his hand, their voices cut off, silenced forcefully. He sparingly used his powers over other gods, never wanting to be like his brother. Sometimes he needed to remind people who he was. Feared God of the Underworld, known for a hot head and deadly power. It was the only way to make himself feel less helpless.โฏย
โI sent her home,โ heโฏansweredโฏhollowly.โฏโAnd the Golden Princess was just snooping around. I saw her leaving.โฏI assume she came here to tell you.” Heโฏdidnโtโฏlook at Persephone. Confronting her had to wait.โฏโฏ”Are you conspiring againstโฏme?โโฏ
Hypnos shook his head vigorously, clawing at the invisible vice that sealed his lips. It snapped away with a sickeningโฏpop,โฏand Hypnosโs kneesโฏfaltered.โฏHe hit the ground at Hades’ feet. Hades propped a footโฏagainstโฏHypnosโs shoulder, pushing him back without pushing him over.โฏโฏโฏย
โIf you must ask me that question, you never truly trusted me,โ Hypnos snarled through clenched teeth, and the gumption brought a smirk to Hadesโ face.โฏโฏย
โWhat would you have me think?โ Hades leaned forward, placing his face close to Hypnosโs. โYou loathed her two months ago. Now,โฏyouโreโฏready to fuck her while my world shatters?โโฏโฏย
โIf I had known…โ Hypnosโs voice trailed off as his eyes flicked to Persephone, who had moved to stand beside them.ย โI should have told you. I was going to.โโฏโฏย
Done listening to Hypnos, Hades removed Persephoneโs gag. Excuses fell from her lips. โWhatever you think you saw is purely sexual.โฏThere is no love between us. I started it and coerced your pet into agreeing.โโฏโฏย
She could notย lie;ย this he knew.โฏย
His anger deflated, leaving him suddenly exhausted.โฏโฏย
Sheโฏwasnโtโฏdone though.โฏโฏย
โI have hated you for so long that I forgot it was a lie,โ she whispered as tears sprangโฏtoโฏher eyes. โIf my mother knew how much I love you…โโฏย
โNo!โ Hades hollered, pushing away from her. The chairโฏheโdโฏbeen sitting onย disappeared before it clattered to the ground. โDo not play these games with me!โฏI shall not fall for them, even if they are the truth.โโฏย
โYouโre cruel,โ she said, her voiceโฏstillโฏsmall.โฏโฏย
โNever to you, Persephone. I have never beenโฏcruelโฏto you.โย
Still stumbling away from them, his back hit the door. It opened and he fell through, expelled from Hypnos’s dreamscape as horror rocked through him. Another wave of heartbreak followed. This time an old, festering wound that had putrefied. The smell of decay sharpened the sensation of his heart shattering. Over and over. Pandora was gone, and Persephone wasn’t. The Fates truly were ruthless.โฏโฏย
โGods above, I didnโt realize the smell of your sorrow would be so delectable,โ a familiar female voice said from behind the fountain, out of view.โฏโYou wouldnโt believe how many favors I had to call in for the chance to watch the mighty God of the Underworld crumble.โโฏโฏย
A shower of Slumber Sand rained down on him before he saw her face. Itโฏdidnโtโฏmatter how powerful he was; Slumber Sand was moreโฏpotent. He spiraled into darkness as the female laughed. The sound echoed through the onset of nightmares and demons.ย
