Disclaimer: This is a fanfiction short story. All characters in this description are the property of JK Rowling.

The visit to the Lovegood home in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows inspired this description of Luna Lovegood’s bedroom. In the book, Harry glimpses Luna’s bedroom before he realizes something isn’t right, and readers get a few brief descriptions of her room. However, (spoiler alert) Luna had already been taken by this point, and her room was empty and covered in dust. So, I decided I wanted to see what Luna’s bedroom looked like back when things were considered “normal,” and the characters were still attending school. Luna’s character would reasonably have become instant friends with the group of characters even if it’s not stated directly in the books, so I placed this description as having taken place during the summer before their sixth year, right after their fight at the Ministry of Magic in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix where she fought fiercely with the rest of the characters.

Luna’s bedroom used to be sparse. There were the few things from her parents and all her clothes, but she had no friends who she shared things with. That was before she met Harry Potter and her new friends. Now her bedroom was filled with fond memories of her time at Hogwarts.

The carpet was pale blue, hinting at her Ravenclaw pride, but it was also many shades lighter to better fit her small space. The lion hat she spent days creating for her support of Gryffindor during a quidditch match lay on the seat of the wooden rocking chair in the corner near the window. A deep blue and gold accented blanket lay strewn across the back.

Her wardrobe was bursting with bright colors and feathers. Her school trunk was shoved in the back of the wardrobe underneath frills and mismatched shoes.

Luna’s bed was covered in a patchwork quilt with all the different shades of color she could find. Her mother helped her sew it the year she died. On top of her dresser to the left of her bed was the pile of books she would need for her sixth year at Hogwarts.

A picture of Luna and her mother sat on the nightstand to the right of her bed. Their moving figures twirled into one another as they embraced and then jumped back. Her wand lay unused in front of it, near some unlit candles of all sizes and colors. Next to the nightstand on the floor stood her stack of Quibbler magazines. She kept a copy of every issue her father edited.

In the middle of the room, the only space with more than a foot to walk, Luna was on top of an unbalanced pile of chairs she stacked herself so she could finish her painting on the ceiling. Looking down on her were the intricately painted faces of her friends: Harry, Ron, Hermione, Ginny, and Neville. Luna’s hand moved with precision as she painted what looked like a golden chain linking all of them together. Upon closer inspection, admirers of her work would see the cursive written words …friends…friends…friends…

Chelsea Wolfe

I have my masters in English & Creative Writing! I'm a mom of two girls and a Husky pup. I'm usually a late-night writer, but I have had to adapt due to kids, work, and having a social life. Now I write every chance I get. I'm constantly looking for other writers to connect with because only writers understand the struggles of writing. I typically write New Adult and I've been dipping my hand in multiple subgenres to fit my interests at the time. This leaves me with multiple projects going at once. If I'm not writing, I can usually be found cuddling in my favorite corner of my mini library reading a book (usually my kids are reading their books with me) or out in the city for a girl's night.
