Kierra leaned over the rail of her new yacht as she let her teardrops become part of the ocean. Sorrow and shame shredded her insides as Marco’s words ran through her head on replay.

“I am happy you got what you always wanted. I feel you would never feel satisfied though.”

“Oh, ma’am,” her server, Annetta, gasped. “Please don’t hang over like that! Are you feeling seasick?’

“Yeah, something like that,” Kierra answered as she straightened up.

She slipped when she turned. Her new Dolce & Gabbana short pleated tulle camellia printed dress blew up above her waist. Annetta swiftly stepped by her side.

“I might have lost my mind, but not my clumsiness.” Kierra laughed as she let Annetta guide her in.

“Mhm. You must go in and lay down,” Annetta replied. “I will get you something to settle your stomach.”

Kierra flopped on the couch as Annetta headed to the medicine cabinet. Kierra got out her cellphone and dialed the third number on her favorite list.

“Hey Babydoll. Enjoying your vacation?”

“I don’t want none of this anymore! I want my life back!”

“This is your life… it’s your doing,” her grandmother responded in a soft tone. “I specifically said the one who has the necklace has to respect its power.”

Kierra quivered with indignation.

“It’s magic… power…or whatever ruined everything,” she argued. “You should’ve given it to me. This is all your fault!”

She hung up and screamed into a pillow.

Sometimes what seems like a blessing can actually be a curse and the other way around. Kierra learned that the hard way when she underestimated the power of her grandmother’s four-leaf clover necklace.

A couple of weeks earlier…

Kierra stared at her laptop screen that displayed several reject letters.

“Ugh!! I can’t have a little luck on my birthday?!” she murmured as she slammed her laptop down.

The lock on the front door clicked. She stood up from her desk and put on a smile.

“How is the Birthday Girl?,” Marco walked in with a friendly grin.

“Ready for a big stiff drink,” she replied. “How was work?”

“Eh. The usual,” Marco said as he put down his keys and the mail. “You got a package. I think it’s from your grandma.”

“Of course it is.” She laughed as she held her out pale freckled arms to catch it. “She has never missed a birthday.”

A green velvet triangle box popped out when she tore it opened. Kierra grabbed it and flipped the top. A piece of folded paper set above a four-leaf clover pendant necklace with 1.62-carats of Colombian emeralds symmetrically shaped as hearts.

“She didn’t…” Kierra stared at the pedant.

“Whoa. That’s a pretty necklace.”

Kierra nodded in response and read the note.

My sweet Kierra,

Hope your birthday is as amazing as you are. I believe you are wise enough to have this now. Tap it twice and always be nice. If you do everything in good faith and love, it will grant you good luck and good fortune. Remember to respect its power.

Love,

Grandma

“Mhm. It’s more than pretty to her… My grandma think it’s a real lucky charm,” she said showing the note.

“Well, do you believe it is?” Marco smirked.

“Eh. Only way to find out,” she put it on and tapped it twice. “Please boost my writing career quickly.”

The next morning…

Kierra rubbed the sleep out of her eyes and check the notifications on her phone. Her heart jumped to her throat when she read an email from one of her top pick literary agents.

“Oh My God.. OH MY GOD! Marco,” she squealed as she nudged him. “WAKE UP!”

“Wha…What…” Marco sleepily sat up.

“One of my top pick literary agents is interested in my novel. She wants to meet next week.”

“That’s great, Babe. Guess the necklace is magical then,” Marco yawned.

“No kidding,” Kierra said as she glanced at the necklace.
