The Love Curse

Normally when one thinks of curses one usually thinks of someone being ugly or having an unattractive quality about their appearance. The curse is always broken by the love of a handsome prince who accepts the princess for who she is, despite the strange feature that hinders her physical beauty. They always end up getting married, and it always ends with the princess being taken away from the evil people who never accepted her. This scenario is wonderful and is very effective in order to give children hope that true love does exist. It shows them that love is not conceited, and only for the pretty people. I find one little problem with the whole prince curing curses scenario. It is not only anti-feminist but also what if your curse is to never find your prince. How exactly is the prince in question, supposed to break that one? I mean that if there is no prince who is supposed to make everything better, how are your problems supposed to be resolved.

Well, I guess according to fairytale guidelines, you are doomed to a life filled with romance novels and cat food. I mean that is what you do, right? You read countless stories about love, the type of love you will never have in your life. The romance novels make you feel sad and lonely so you decide to fill the void with twenty to thirty furry animals that cough up hairballs, scratch you when you make them mad, and lick themselves clean. Nothing says, “I love you” more than a giant hairball on your carpet.

What is the point of this speech you ask? Some young woman with slight self-esteem issues who thinks she will never find love probably wrote this. A girl who needs to look inside herself and realize her amazing qualities then a wonderful guy will appreciate her for who she is. She just needs to stop looking, and she will find whom she belongs with right?

You could not be further from the truth. I was placed under a curse to never find romantic love. There will not be any prince gazing at me with loving eyes that makes women feel like their entire body has the consistency of pudding. You are probably wondering how this happened, and who I am right?

Well, the story begins one night about six years ago when I was fourteen. It was a dark night with not a single star in the sky. I sat looking outside my large glass window that overlooked the front of the circular courtyard, which was covered in light pink roses. I sat with my hand on my cheek, upset that nothing interesting ever happened here when I saw someone approach the stone walkway that led to the entrance of the castle. They were wearing a long emerald cloak outlined in gold. I watched in morbid fascination, as the flowers grew taller like weeds as they passed. I ran down the stairs. I continued running before I collided head-on with a wall of muscle. I looked up at their face. My brown eyes met with his light green eyes. He had a thin face and a lean build. I know most of the guards where has he been my whole life?

“Princess, are you alright?” If I could just stare at you all day, I would be. I thought to myself as I twirled my blonde hair around my finger.

“There’s a creepy looking person walking up to the castle so I was running to find someone,” I commented moving away from him and making sure there were no wrinkles in my dress.

“Creepy how exactly?” The guard asked me as he arched an eyebrow.

“The flowers grew instantly around her as she passed them,” I said calmly.

“Princess are you sure you didn’t hit your head or something flowers don’t just instantly grow in a matter of minutes.” He said looking at me his eyes filled with sympathy. Okay, you’re cute, but if you keep looking at me like I’m crazy we will never work.

“I know what I saw,” I said calmly trying to keep the irritation from my voice.

“I’ll go with you to see what is going on.” He says as he gestured for me to lead the way. Okay, he must be new. Everyone knows my guards walk in front of me in case someone tries to attack the castle so that I can use them as a human shield. I’m a princess. People actually mourn our deaths. They are usually public affairs. My kingdom needs me, not some worthless guard. I walk down the stairs quickly, and into the main foyer that is just simple diamond walls with red ruby chandeliers decorate the ceiling. I push the other guards out of the way in order to make room. Don’t people know that they are supposed to move for princesses?

“Open the doors,” I tell guards.

The guard sighs, and I just tap my foot impatiently. Can they move any slower?

The guard opens it to reveal a young woman with long curly black hair reaching to her waist. It had pink strands throughout it as well. She had a slim build and honey-colored skin with dark green eyes that matched the cloak she was wearing down to the gold flecks that twinkled in her eyes.

“Hello, I am Cassandra Theeto. I would like to see the King and Queen please.” She said in a voice that I imagined was the type that could call birds. She was of those princesses I’ll bet.

I smiled at her sweetly, “They are out on diplomatic business I’m afraid. They won’t be back for a month.” I say pouring of an ounce of royal decorum I had into that one sentence.

“I shall stay here then until they return then,” She says smiling at me with her lips, not her teeth.

Ooh, maybe she has horrible teeth. Everyone has to have one flaw right? I was determined to find hers. Cassandra glides in past me, yes you read that right she glides. What kind of people glide? Demons glide that’s who. That’s it I’m sleeping with a crucifix under my pillow, and a bottle of holy water under my bed if she’s going to be living here.

“Your heart is very cold, and selfish. Good luck finding a husband with that.” Cassandra commented as she studied me shrewdly with her green eyes.

“Don’t worry about my prospects bitch just worry about when your roots start to show,” I said bitterly.

“For your stupidity, I will try and help you. You will only find your true love when you look up from your small little world. Many will come to have your hand, and you may fall for them, but you will not have them.”
I laughed in her face. Six years later, She’s still here, and I’m still single.
