There are no Govern-mans
Only Éowyn and she is the Queen.
Her brother shows her a map,
Tells her they live in America,
Repeats ‘representative democracy’
And other words he’s heard in school.
“No we don’t,” she insists.
“We live on Earth. And I’m the Queen.”
He asks exactly what she is the queen of.
“Earth,” her Royal Majesty replies.
She’ll be four next month
And she’ll take one of everything for her birthday.
She argues with dinosaur chicken nuggets
And she’s right–
When you can’t see the horns
It does look more like a centrosaurus
Than a triceratops.
In her palace courtyard one morning,
She found an empty snail shell
And named him Snaily.
She laid him gently on a yellow walnut leaf
In the late summer sun.
She waited as patiently as she could
For Snaily to come out and play.
When we came back, the leaf had blown away.
She cried because she would never see Snaily again.
There are no Govern-mans
Only Éowyn, Queen of Earth.
