Follow Your Curiosity, Not Your Passion

I’ve always experienced difficulty grasping the concept of passion. Regarding what I wanted to pursue career-wise, I felt restricted by the “follow your passion” narrative. This is because I didn’t have a single goal to achieve. Some people are certain of what they want and can’t imagine it any other way. Others possess multiple interests or need to be made aware of them.

Passions tend to fade over time as humans change and evolve, and that includes your goals and chosen paths. The pressure to have a clear calling and chase it may cause you to feel stuck, going back and forth between what you thought your purpose might be. How do you get out of this trap? Follow your curiosity. It’s your lifelong compass to fuel personal growth and create your own opportunities, opening doors to the interests yet to be discovered. When passion fades, curiosity leads, igniting inspiration and motivation to delve into something new again. This is essential for adapting and shifting gears when necessary in a perpetually changing world.

Continuous Learning

Leading with curiosity means a more fulfilling life of growth and learning. You’re stepping out of your comfort zone and dismantling the idea that you only possess one career. Following this path, you’ll discover new ideas and interests you wouldn’t have guessed. That’s because, unlike chasing or finding a passion, there are no expectations when delving into your curiosities. These changes open doors to more knowledge and new experiences that add to your personal and professional development. There is no fear of failure or pressure of commitment.

Adaptability

Curiosity encourages flexibility and a growth mindset. It’s more focused on gaining and honing skills, making you a versatile, adaptable, and valuable addition to almost any field of work. This fosters motivation and progress while pivoting to a different role or endeavor. Your desire to learn will keep you open to accepting new challenges and perspectives, which are essential when dealing with unexpected changes or situations. If you wonder or question how to start a blog, don’t leave it hanging. Instead of abandoning such possibilities as ordinary thoughts, take that first step. This is better than being regretful later on in life and wondering what could have been. Build your skillset and resilience by delving into what interests you.

If you’ve also found the “follow your passion” route has never made much sense, reframe the narrative and remember you won’t figure everything out immediately. Inquisitiveness is a natural human characteristic; exploring will not fail you. If something piques your interest, it’s up to you to research and plan. You never know where you’ll end up. Curiosity is a more practical and rewarding path than passion because you’re discovering your talents and paths as you go. Embrace them, no matter how small. Trying new things will help you find your desired pursuit or rule out what you don’t want to do. Allow your curiosities to lead the way to your next endeavor.
