Many people don’t realize the impact a pet can have on their life and the life of members of their family. Owning any pet can significantly improve your health in many ways. When people think about having a pet, they think of the obvious pet, such as a cat or a dog, while these are the most popular pets to own there are several other types of pets as well.

Pets not only improve your health but the health of your children as well. Ways that pets can improve your children’s health are as follows:

  • Children will have fewer colds and ear infections when you own a pet.
  • Children will be less likely to have asthma.
  • Children with autism benefit from a pet because they learn to interact with others by first interacting with their pet.
  • Having a pet will also teach your children responsibility.
  • Owning a pet also helps your children to build up antibodies which help to build immunity to certain things.

Not only do all of these things benefit your children they help you as well. You will be less likely to get colds and allergies too. Some other benefits for you are:

  • Having a pet can help to lower your blood pressure.
  • You will be less likely to suffer from heart disease. If you already have a heart condition having a pet will help you to live longer.
  • Pets help you connect with other people. You will have something in common to talk about.
  • Having a pet helps to get you out to places you probably would not go if you did not own a pet.
  • Pets make you less stressed. Studies have shown that just by petting your animal will greatly reduce your stress hormones and make you feel more relaxed.
  • Pets can help you to be in a better mood and better state of mind. They take your mind off of your stressful life, even if for a few minutes. It helps you to put things into perspective as well.
  • |Pets also get you outside. By going outside, you enjoy your Vitamin D, fresh air, and sunshine. All of these things make your body feel good.
  • Pets will help to reduce loneliness and are great companions. You can spend time with them, and they will listen to whatever is on your mind.
  • Pets will love you no matter what you do. You could make a huge mistake at work or in your personal life, and when you come home to your pet, they love you just the same. They are not disappointed, and they do not judge you on whatever it is that you do.
  • Pets are great for exercise. They get you up and going by taking walks or just playing with them. This helps to keep you moving and motivated. By moving around with your pet, you get a natural boost of energy. Having this energy can trickle over into other parts of your life as well.
  • You are less likely to suffer from depression when you own a pet.

Pets are great for older people too. Dogs, for example, help Alzheimer patients to feel better and just by the patient touching and interacting with the dog they can soothe the patient. They help to keep older people connected with the outside world and ensure they do not feel lonely. Pets are also suitable for caregivers, as well.

Pets can also help people who need extra help. These pets are known as service animals. Service animals can help to save their owner’s life. Even if you have been in the hospital for any length of time coming home to a pet can help you with the rehabilitation process. You will see more improvement in a smaller amount of time than someone who does not own a pet.

Examples of some service dogs are:

Diabetic Dogs: These dogs are trained to alert their owner if the owner’s blood glucose level drops. The dogs can do this by the smell that is given off by the human when there is a chemical decrease.

Eye Seeing Dogs: These dogs are trained to help guide people who are unable to see.

Parkinson’s: Some dogs can perform tasks for their owners that are too difficult for the owner to do for themselves.

Seizures: There are special dogs that have been trained to alert people when their owner is having a seizure or is going to have a seizure.

Something to remember though is having a pet is a commitment. You will need to make sure you are prepared to take on this responsibility. Once a pet is purchased, or adopted, they become a significant part of your family. They will need love and to be well cared for as if they were a human family member.
