I keep finding pieces of myself
Like a puzzle scattered across the floor
Waiting to be reunited
Into a whole image

I find corner pieces at the bottom of a latte
As I reminisce about the times I shared
With the ones I love

I find edge pieces on leisurely walks
Admiring nature in all seasons
And wishing the sun would stay out
Just a little bit longer

I find some bottom pieces on long drives
As each unfamiliar mile
Takes me on a new adventure

I find top pieces among the blankets
As I allow myself the space to rest
Knowing that my chores will be there
Another day

I find left-side pieces in my work
The words no longer caught in my throat
As I try to express myself in poems

I find right side pieces in my child
In learning when to play, and when to work
And giving her a safe space to be herself
Like I once needed

I find the center pieces in my soul
As I permit myself to think independently
And break the toxic habits that prevent me from growing

I keep finding pieces of myself
And, with time and patience
They’ll reveal the whole image
Of who I’m meant to be

Erynn Crittenden

Erynn Crittenden has written poetry since she could hold a pen. This love prompted her to earn a BA in Creative Writing, where she learned how to experiment with syllables and styles. Since then, Erynn has self-published three poetry collections (By the Bones, Transfiguration, and Into the Western Sky) through Amazon. She also writes and publishes plenty of individual poems on her website, and her work has appeared in the Talon Literary Magazine, the Beautiful Poetry anthology by Silent Sparks Press, the #AmWriting anthology by the Wayne Foundation, and Life Blood: A Collection of Vampire Tales by Gary Hill. Erynn is also the creator and host of the Present Poetry Podcast, where she reads and celebrates a different poet every week. Find it and the rest of her works by visiting her website at LadyErynn.com.
